Caledon facts and informationBloemfontein (flower fountain, nickname: the city of roses) is the most centrally situated metropolitan area of South Africa and is capital of the Free State as well as the judicial capital. The first white settlers arrived here in the 1820's and negotiated land from the Sotho community to establish their farm which became a popular stop over for travelers and Bloemfontein was born. The name Bloemfontein is thought to have originated from the flower garden and orchard established with water from the original spring. There are a number of statues and historical buildings in the city. Museums and galleries feature prehistoric exhibits as well as artefacts related to Free State and Boer War history. Bloemfontein's Free State stadium complex hosts international rugby, soccer and cricket and is home to Bloemfontein's local teams. The Loch Logan is Bloemfontein's waterfront and entertainment area which includes pubs, shops , restaurants, cinemas and banks.
